Meet The Team

Professor Ajay Rane PSM OAM

Professor Ajay Rane is the Director of Urogynaecology at Townsville University Hospital, Director of Mater Pelvic Health and Research and Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at James Cook University (JCU). Professor Rane holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Poona and a PhD from JCU.
Ajay was awarded the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2013 and the Public Service Medal (PSM) in 2022. Professor Rane has spent over two decades treating and operating on women with catastrophic childbirth injuries in some of the world’s poorest countries. In 2016, he received the Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Award for Humanitarian Work in Women’s Health.
Ajay is the current Chair of the Fistula Committee for the International Federation of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and is leading the charge for fistula education and prevention in the developing world. In May 2020, Ajay received an honorary fellowship from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologist for his work in advancing women’s health.
Ajay is the current Chair of the Townsville Hospital and Health Board’s Safety and Quality Committee

A/Professor Jay Iyer

Associate Professor Jay Iyer is an advanced endoscopic surgeon whose expertise lies in treating complex gynaecological surgical problems. Jay is a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and is the Director of the Australasian Gynaecological Endoscopy and Surgery Fellowship program. Working in close collaboration with Prof Rane, Jay provides minimal access procedures to optimise patient outcomes and recovery times.

Dr Chrispen Mushaya

Dr Mushaya is an Australian trained colorectal surgeon with a wealth of experience.

Dr Bhanu Rathnamma

Dr Bhanu is a specialist paediatric surgeon and paediatric urologist. He has a wide range of experience and expertise in managing the full spectrum of paediatric surgical conditions.
He did his training in paediatric surgery in renowned children’s hospitals in India, New Zealand and Australia. He obtained a Masters in laparoscopic surgery from Adelaide university in 2010 and fellowship in paediatric surgery (FRACS) from the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in 2015.
He currently holds the position of consultant paediatric surgeon and paediatric urologist in Townsville University Hospital and senior lecturer position in James Cook University.
Dr Bhanu’s clinical interests are general paediatric surgery, paediatric urology, laparoscopic surgery, neonatal surgery, burns surgery, urinary and faecal incontinence. Dr Bhanu also provides services of neonatal circumcision, tongue tie release and antenatal counselling for congenital anomalies.
Dr Bhanu is a member of Australia and New Zealand Association of Paediatric Surgeons (ANZAPS) and Society of Paediatric Urology New Zealand and Australia (SPUNZA).
Dr Bhanu provides clinical services privately, across the region of North Queensland. He is looking forward to collaborating with General Practitioners and Paediatricians in the region to provide high quality surgical services to the children of North Queensland.
